A dozen environmental groups are suing the federal government over a
decision to remove gray wolves in the northern Rocky Mountains from the
endangered species list, the Times' Tami Abdollah reports.
The groups filed suit Monday.
Gray wolves, once plentiful from central Mexico to the Arctic, virtually
disappeared from the American West by the 1930s. In 1974, they were listed
as endangered. They were reintroduced to the northern Rockies starting in
1995, and since then their population has soared to about 1,500.
Since the delisting went into effect March 28, at least 35 wolves have
been killed in Idaho, Montana and Wyoming, and environmental groups are
asking for an injunction to stop the kills.
Federal protection is a hot topic lately, with the listing of the sage
grouse as endangered being
reconsidered, and a federal judge ordering the Interior Department to
decide quickly whether to classify polar bears as endangered species
because of ice melting caused by global warming.

Wolf-Proof: Raichle Shoes are stronger than wolf jaws
Jason "Wolf-Boy" Rosenberg works at
the Wolf Mountain Sanctuary, California and has tested his Raichle shoes by
wolf:
The first pair of Raichle boots that I ever wore were my father's Raichle mountaineering boots. I
was a little kid wanting to be just like dad. I would spend hours trying to fill those boots,
pretending that I was going with him to climb one of the many Volcano's
he had climbed. Twenty-five years have passed since then, and he still has those boots. |
|

About 5 years ago, I needed a new pair of hiking boots. I tormented my girlfriend by trying on every
single pair of boots in the store. I tested each boot by climbing on an in-store rock face and would
put all of my weight on the front instep and outer edge of the sole. If I slipped off the rock, the
boot was ripped off my foot and thrown in a pile of rejects. Only 2 pairs passed this test, a cheap
canvas pair that I knew I would destroy rather quickly, and a pair of Raichle boots. They were over
twice as much, but I remembered how many miles my father had walked in his mountaineering boots.
Deciding on durability, I bought them.
|
|

In the last five years, I have traveled all over the
world in those boots. I have hiked in all types of weather and terrain, wearing these Raichle boots
in 20 US States, 2 Canadian Provinces, and a total of 8 different countries, not to mention simple
casual wear.
I am now 34 and work with 16 wolves at Wolf
Mountain Sanctuary. Working with them is the most intense passion I have ever known.
Besides rescue and rehabilitation, we educate. I am one of the tour guides and I love to teach
people about both wild and captive wolves. Our visitors get to come in and interact with some of the
wolves, providing an experience that they will remember for the rest of their lives. I was adopted
by this pack several years ago, and have helped to raise some of them. We take naps together, and
sometimes, they even bring me meat when they think I am hungry! I am very lucky and grateful to have
this interaction with them.
|
|

I could tell you hours of stories about this, but let me
tell you about one wolf in particular.
His name is Istas Pejuta (pronounced Ishta Peshuta)
which means Medicine Eyes. I helped raise Istas and he is like my little brother. Istas and his
enclosure mates frequently play, and during some of the wolf-games, I am allowed to participate.
In between
naps and general relaxation, we chase each other and wrestle, but Istas has only one goal in mind.
His life's mission is simply to steal my Raichle boots off of my feet. Never is he as focused and
persistent
than when he is attempting this.
This game started about 2 years ago, and I cannot tell you
enough how amazed I am at the strength and durability of these boots!
|
|
|
|
For the record, humans have a jaw strength of 300
pounds per square inch. A German Shepard has 750. Wolves have 1500, as they are built to tear
through the toughest of flesh and crush the bones of a moose if need be.

Istas is my friend and feels horrible if he ever hurts me. He is
always very gentle when we play, but when he is after my boots, he is really trying to take them
from me. A couple of times, he has been so excited, he has bitten down hard enough to bruise
my feet with his very sharp teeth.

Throughout all of his numerous attempts, he has NEVER punctured or
torn these boots. He has been frustrated for 2 years now, leaving only scratches and little nicks on
the leather.
|
I do my best to convince all of the employees and everyone that comes
through the wolf sanctuary to do themselves a favor and buy a pair of Raichle boots. After all of
this, I will NEVER purchase another brand of boots. Thank you for making such a superior product!
Best regards,
Jason “Wolf-Boy” Rosenberg

The Sanctuary will be closed from April 5 - 12, 2006. Tonya is
going to Arizona to look at some land!! She is going on a scouting trip for the
Sanctuary's new dream location. This is a dream of ours to move to a place better suited for
the wolves. We are seeking 100-200 acres in Northern Arizona. We want the wolves to be
able to live in a cooler climate and our goal is to give each pack 10 acres to run and play
on.. If you know of any land like this, please contact us at wolfmtnsanctuary@yahoo.com.
Donations were made so that Tonya could make this fact finding trip
by:
John T. and Laurie B.
Tom & Cris Spahr (gas card for $100)
Thank you all for this help and please send your prayers that we find
the dream site!
=====================================================
John T. and Laurie B. have been up to the sanctuary many times. They
are currently working on a documentary about Tonya and the wolves. Please check back and we
will post when it is complete and how you can view it!

Tamaka's New Compound
Well the county has turned down repeated requests by WMS to build this
new compound.
Our neighbor, who repeatedly complains about the wolves is the reason
they will not allow it. We have explained that we are not getting another wolf, just giving
him a new compound. Red tape, ugh!
So we have all the fencing and supplies that were purchased with your
kind donations but we cannot use it.
We will be taking the fence with us, when we relocate to Arizona...
Tamaka has adjusted to Niosha's loss but he still needs to be with a
companion. This will have to wait until our move.
===================================================
March 6, 2006
It's almost Spring in the high desert of Lucerne Valley, CA. The
wolves coats are a bit confused as it is not typically this warm this time of year. Some days
are very warm and others are cool. The nights are still cold...
Next month we have many many birthdays! The pups will be two
years old! They have grown into beautiful youngsters so fast. The are going into their
teenage stage. They are mischievous and rambunctious and very very active.
They still run and play and yes, get into trouble.
Wanagi is definitely the Alpha Female. Alpha Male goes back and
forth between Yawto and Istas... Istas is the older wolf and as Wanagi is his mate, he tends
to rule the most. Yawto seems to be the protector. When the wolves growl and there are
visitors, Yawto gets in between the visitor and the wolves playing and growling.
Dakota is still having issues with stiffness, he is starting to show
his age. When getting off his lean too he has quite a tough time. We need to get some
wood donated so we can build him a ramp. Bob, the Caretaker, has a plan for a ramp. If
you can please donate the wood or funds for the ramp that would be great! Call Bob at
760-248-7818 and he will tell you his plan and what he needs.
Apache is still going strong. His walk is wobbly but his heart
and soul are strong. He still wanders around the compound checking everything out...
Tamaka is doing good, he is healthy and loving to the staff.
The juveniles, Wana, Shanta and Wakinyan are still not allowed
visitors. The staff is working with them to try and calm them down. They get much to
rowdy when visitors are with them, running and jumping very fast. You can get knocked down
easily... So for safety, only staff is allowed in the compound with them.
Come up and visit soon!
